No More Time-Outs, America!

Thursday, June 18th, 2020

That improvements to passenger rail, public transit, bridges, rural roads and interstates are needed is not up for debate. In 2017, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) informed all of America that our infrastructure was graded at a D+. This included multiple systems, but largely surface transportation. Learning From the 2009 Recovery Act - report cover

The United States now needs another stimulus. A COVID-19 recession is all but certain. Additional spending will almost certainly follow the CARES Act approved by Congress in late March. While there are enormous needs for relief and support all across the economy, the president and many congressional leaders have indicated that they want infrastructure to be a major part of some future stimulus bill. If Congress wants to use infrastructure spending to create jobs and support recovery, we should learn from the previous stimulus.

Thursday, December 5th, 2019

In Miami-Dade County, one of three counties that comprise the teeming Miami metropolitan region, the interstate system, heavily traveled expressways, electronic toll lanes and express buses provide a matrix of connectivity, but the cost of better infrastructure, streamlining public transit to propel ridership, and the need for federal support are foremost.

Measure M: Lessons from a Successful Transportation Ballot Campaign

Thursday, July 25th, 2019
Ballot Box

In November 2016 voters in Los Angeles County approved a ½ cent sales tax increase to finance transportation called Measure M. Formally titled the “Los Angeles County Traffic Improvement Plan,” Measure M was proposed by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) and on Election Day won resoundingly, with 71.15 percent of the vote. Measure M’s passage marked the fourth time since 1980, and the second time since 2008, that LA County voters approved a sales tax increase to finance transportation. The measure is expected to generate $120 billion over forty years to fund 50 transportation projects.

Guest on The Infra Blog: Dave Sandor, Co-Founder & CEO, Allinfra

We’ve built a platform that we hope allows a broader spectrum of investors to access infrastructure investment directly, and on the flipside, allow those that require financing for infrastructure to tap into a broader pool of investors…By giving direct access, by putting the investor as close as possible to the underlying asset, stripping out intermediaries, we hope to be able to pass on a greater share of the returns from the asset to the ultimate investor.

The percentage of roads in “good condition” increased only slightly: from 36 to 38 percent over that eight-year period.

A Policymaker’s Guide to Road User Charges

American highway with city skyline
