Building Highways in the Sky: State DOTs Leading the Evolution of Drones

In this Transportation TV News Special Report, Building Highways in the Sky: State DOTs Leading the Evolution of Drones learn about a March 2018 survey by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials that shows 35 of 44 responding state departments of transportation (80 percent) are deploying unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), or drones, for a wide range of purposes. The survey finds that 20 state DOTs have incorporated drones into their daily operations. Another 15 state DOTs are in the research phase – testing drones to determine how they can be utilized. “This is another example of how state DOTs are advancing innovation to improve safety and productivity for the traveling public,” said Bud Wright AASHTO executive director. “Drones are being used to significantly cut the time it takes to gather data, which is leading to major time and cost savings.” Use this link to see the complete results of the March 2018 Survey.

AASHTO Executive Director Bud Wright Talks Transportation on CSPAN

On January 4th 2018, Bud Wright, executive director of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), appeared live on CSPAN’s Washington Journal. The broadcast focused on the topic of infrastructure investment and the challenges ahead this year. Wright spoke on behalf AASHTO’s members; the transportation departments in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This video contains experts of Wright’s comments about key issues such as public and private transportation investment, project streamlining and fixing the troubled Highway Trust Fund.

AASHTO: State DOTs Using Drones to Improve Safety, Collect Data Faster and Cut Costs

A growing number of state departments of transportation are leveraging innovative drone technology to creatively improve safety, reduce traffic congestion and save money. This Transportation TV Special Report explores the many ways in which state DOTs are using drones. According to a March 2016 survey by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, 33 state departments of transportation have or are exploring, researching, testing or using unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly referred to as drones, to inspect bridges and assist with clearing vehicle crashes, among other innovative applications. AASHTO has also prepared an on-line fact sheet that highlights the many benefits of UAVs.

Transportation TV: 10,000 Recovery Projects Underway

President Obama holds a news conference to break ground on the 10,000th Recovery highway project. We’ll take you to Ohio, for the big event. This week also marks the first anniversary of the tragic METRO Rail crash near the nation’s Capitol. Several U.S. Senators held a news conference calling for tough, federal regulation of the nation’s transit systems. We’ll also tell you about a memorial service held to remember the nine victims who died in last year when the two METRO trains collided. And several members of Congress took a ride with U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood this week, down Pennsylvania Avenue.
