The importance of the overall initiative is twofold: one is infrastructure. Public infrastructure lays the foundation for economic development, lays the foundation for recruiting new businesses and creating a sustainability for communities. More importantly at the current time, it’s created jobs.
In 2013, the Nevada State Legislature passed Assembly Bill 413 to fund critical roadway improvements. Since then, we’ve awarded $620,000,000 dollars, created 8,000 jobs, funded 225 projects, and employed 78 local small businesses.

In January, NDOT broke ground on a $78 million dollar widening and upgrade to a six-mile-long stretch of U.S. Highway 95 between Ann and Kyle Canyon roads in northwest Las Vegas. The project will relieve congestion, improve efficiency and enhance safety, while providing capacity for future growth. Currently, over 52,000 vehicles daily travel through the corridor; however, traffic is expected to more than double over the next two decades.

“These public-private partnerships that they tout really don’t work. We tried that in downtown Las Vegas to do the new Project Neon, and just couldn’t generate enough revenue from the private sector, so we know that is not the “silver bullet.” I’m opposed to privatizing government services, because then the priority shifts from service to profit, and that never works. If you talk about something like air traffic control, that’s especially egregious because we have the safest system there is; we’re going to now undermine that.”

As crews begin repaving of both directions of highway through the Cave Rock tunnels and complete roadside drainage and water quality improvements near Glenbrook, drivers are asked to anticipate work zone traffic changes. Beginning the week of Sept. 12 through mid-October, travel lanes may be shifted through the work zone as traffic begins being alternated between the eastbound and westbound tunnels for final paving and lighting work. Oversize and overdimensional semi-trucks are not permitted through the tunnel during construction.
