In cities that are building protected bike lane networks, cycling is increasing and the risk of injury or death is decreasing. Pairing appropriately-scaled bike share with protected bike lanes increases ridership and is essential to equity and mobility efforts.

Positioning new mobility services to provide access and mobility to all, and to buttress rather than undermine the successful transit lines at the heart of our cities, is vital to realizing the value of fully automated vehicles for mobility. At the same time, policy at every level of government should address head-on the destructive potential for increased traffic, emissions from additional driving, and on-street congestion that could easily result from automated vehicle technology.
A few months ago, I was in Austin, Texas for the NACTO 2015 Summit. Although I was quite busy and we got hit with a major rainstorm of epic proportions, I was able to shoot enough video to put together a limited look at what is going on in the city. Even more fortunate, soon after the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) named Austin their 22nd Gold status bike city near the end of 2015, making Austin the first city in Texas to claim the honor.

In October, NACTO held their 4th annual “Designing Cities” conference with a record 650+ attendees from all over the world. This year’s event was in Austin, Texas which showcased many of the recent transportation improvements the city has done, including the new 3rd Street protected cycle track…As usual the event focussed on what people can learn from best practices in cities all over the United States & the world featuring plenary speakers such as Janette Sadik-Khan and Philadelphia Mayor Micheal Nutter as well as panels, city tours and the NACTO Camp which is an unconference which allows attendees to propose their own topics for discussion.

But other than some fantastic greenways like the Minuteman Trail, riding along the Charles, and some ahead-of-its-time traffic calming & bike lanes in Cambridge, cyclists have had very little to crow about. In fact, it wasn’t uncommon to hear murmurs that Boston was the worst cycling city in the U.S.
