The construction of the Hudson River Bridge (it was not called the George Washington Bridge until it was nearly done) was one of the engineering marvels of its day. The longest suspension bridge in the world when it opened, it opened a year early because construction went faster than planned.

The New York Transit Museum archives have this vintage video produced by the NY Transportation Board in 1949 about the New York City subway system. At the time, the fare was $0.10 – and the turnstiles had been modified to accommodate a dime. The first subway token wasn’t used until 1953.

The Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel, the highest vehicular tunnel in the world, lies entirely within the Arapaho National Fores…During construction approximately 1 million cubic yards of material was cleared from each bore. 190,000 cubic yards of concrete was used for each tunnel lining.
