Anthony Foxx became the 17th United States Secretary of Transportation on July 2, 2013.

“We just appreciate all the efforts to educate folks and to help folks understand that they can play a role in moving America forward. One of the biggest problems we have in infrastructure right now is how to pay for it, and when you start peeling the onion back it gets back to whether the public is actually going to support and get behind efforts to actually pay for what we need. Part of what we’re doing is trying to educate people and connect the dots so that they see that these investments that happen at the federal level aren’t some kind of smoke and mirrors. It’s stuff that actually helps them on the ground.”

The mid-term elections have put an end to any lingering hope of passing a long-term transportation bill during the congressional lame duck session. Such hope was recently expressed by Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, and two Democratic senators, Tom Carper (D-DE) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee…But with the November elections heralding a fiscally more conservative political climate and with Congress preoccupied with a whole lot of unfinished business, passing a massive multi-year multi-billion funding bill for transportation during the lame duck session will be the last thing on the lawmakers’ minds.

Nurse Lan, on time every time, thanks to transit

Lan is a nurse –a patient care manager in the Oncology Ward of MedStar Washington Hospital Center here in the nation’s capital. Lan and the nurses she helps oversee provide care for patients battling cancer. And her reliance on public transit to get to this important job makes it clear: When we or our loved ones depend on dedicated caregivers like Lan Phan, we also depend on a safe, efficient transportation network to get them to work so they can deliver that care.
