AASHTO National Contest Selects Two State DOT Projects as the Best of the Best

For eleven straight years the America’s Transportation Awards competition sponsored by AASHTO, Socrata, AAA and the US Chamber of Commerce has showcased the very best transportation projects in nation. This video highlights the 2018 competition which attracted 79 project nominations from 35 state DOTs. 12 projects earned the right to compete for the grand prize and the Socrata People’s Choice Award. The top two prizes and $10,000 cash awards—to be given to a charity or transportation-related scholarship program of the winner’s choosing–were presented Sept. 24, 2018 at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in Atlanta.

The Road to Tanana, Alaska: Proving that Rural Connections Improve Lives

Many communities in rural Alaska are only accessible by air or by barge, making the transport of both people and goods expensive. Jeff Weltzin is the city manager of Tanana, Alaska, which is located 130 miles west of Fairbanks, near the Yukon River. Weltzin says Tanana’s 300 residents were being severely impacted by transportation costs—which was driving up the cost of living.

AASHTO Executive Director Bud Wright Talks Transportation on CSPAN

On January 4th 2018, Bud Wright, executive director of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), appeared live on CSPAN’s Washington Journal. The broadcast focused on the topic of infrastructure investment and the challenges ahead this year. Wright spoke on behalf AASHTO’s members; the transportation departments in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. AASHTO’s New President on Trump and Challenges Facing Transportation

Newly elected AASHTO President John Schroer has worn many hats in his 65 years. He’s run a commercial real estate business, served as the mayor of Franklin, Tennessee and in 2011, he was appointed commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Transportation where he’s responsible for more than 3,400 employees. In Sept. 2017 the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials—Board Directors elected Schroer AASHTO president. In this Presidential Profile video Schroer explains why ensuring sustainable Federal funding for transportation is one of his top priorities. President Schroer also says he will work closely with the Trump administration and help State DOTs to prepare for the fast emerging technologies that are changing transportation as we know it.

AASHTO Celebrates the 60th Anniversary of America’s Interstate Highway System

60 years ago President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act, which was also known as the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act, into law on June 29, 1956. Within a few years the nation would see construction begin replacing a network of two-lane U.S. highways with the multi-lane, high-speed interstate system we know today.
