Streetfilms: NYC — Cyclists Become “Human Bollards” to Protect 2nd Ave Bike Lane

Earlier this summer, DOT filled an 18-block gap in the Second Avenue bike lane in Midtown. But there’s a big problem with the project: On most of those blocks, the new bike lane isn’t protected at rush hour, when the number of cyclists is highest and car traffic is most intense.So this morning, Transportation Alternatives volunteers took safety in their own hands, lining up between 45th Street and 44th Street to form a “human-protected bike lane” during the 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. rush.

Contracting opportunities more abundant now at the local levels of government…a trend to watch!

Major cities throughout the U.S. are focused on urban redesign to create vibrant communities in downtown areas. Parks, trails, green spaces and community gathering places are all being constructed. Green infrastructure is also a high priority. Engineering design firms, construction contractors, landscaping companies and playground equipment suppliers are in high demand. Cities are also enhancing Wi-Fi access, moving to IoT (Internet of Things) technology and launching renewable energy projects. Funds for these types of projects are coming from various sources and as a result, lots of attention is now focused on what’s happening at the local levels of government.

What Skewed Rail Crossings Do to Bicyclists

Monday, August 21st, 2017

This video is the result of a research effort by faculty and students at the University of Tennessee to document and study the hazards associated with railway grade crossings on bicycle safety (published in the Journal of Transport & Health). Most video was captured in August and September, 2014 on Neyland Drive, in Knoxville TN. The City of Knoxville has since realigned both rail crossings largely solving the safety problem.

Economic Impacts of Active Transportation in Utah

Despite the increasing popularity of walking, biking, and running in Utah, little has been done to quantify and monetize the benefits that result from active transportation facilities and active travel. Understanding the direct and induced impacts of active transportation helps elevate active travel in funding decisions and priorities. It can help governments and non-profits plan investments in healthy community infrastructure and programs. In response to this need, the Utah Transit Authority and 11 agency collaborators initiated this study to estimate the health and economic benefits of active transportation to inform policy and planning decisions.

California: South Coast Bike Share Feasibility Report

This report is intended to be a starting point for further discussion and outreach among the public, stakeholders, local businesses, and local agencies to evaluate the efficacy of a local bikeshare system, ensure that the system is planned correctly and that all concerns are addressed adequately. The South Coast Bike Share Initiative conducted this feasibility study process over the course of 2016, thanks to generous support by the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition, Santa Barbara City College, and the University of California – Santa Barbara.

Pedestrian Traffic Fatalities by State

The number of pedestrian fatalities in the United States (U.S.) increased 25 percent from 2010 to 2015, while at the same time, total traffic deaths increased by about six (6) percent. Pedestrians now account for the largest proportion of traffic fatalities recorded in the past 25 years. Earlier studies by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), based on preliminary data reported by State Highway Safety Offices (SHSOs), were the first to predict recent increases in pedestrian fatalities.
