Public, private stakeholder input sought on infrastructure regulatory reform

“There is no silver bullet, just a lot of silver BBs.” That’s how U.S. Sen. Benjamin Cardin described the conundrum facing state and local government leaders dealing with funding shortfalls. At a Tuesday congressional hearing on leveraging federal transportation funding, panelists explained that transportation needs can’t be solved by placing all responsibility on state and local governmental entities. There is agreement that transportation officials need funding options just to maintain the current transportation infrastructure, but state and local leaders are arguing for continued investment from the federal government as well.

Public officials in need of funding for infrastructure projects should check out the Build America Bureau!

Last week, DOT announced another groundbreaking financial tool – a product of the Build America Bureau – and provided an example. The Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority (Sound Transit) and the Build America Bureau signed a pioneering, first-of-its-kind Master Credit Agreement (MCA). The agreement lays a foundation for working together to initiate four transit projects in the Seattle area. The projects, now that they are consolidated, will be eligible to receive close to $2 billion in financing. As a result of the MCA, the Build America Bureau will be able to close one deal that covers multiple projects.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) plays a critical role in connecting Americans and communities to these opportunities. DOT’s role has typically been to directly support the states through drafting regulation, creating informational resources, and providing technical assistance and program funding. Through the Ladders of Opportunity Transportation Empowerment Pilot (LaddersTEP) model, DOT provided direct aid to cities to achieve these positive results.

Open Letter from Secretary Foxx and 11 Former DOT Secretaries Urging Congress to Address Long-Term Transportation Needs

As Congress considers legislation to avoid a shortfall of the Highway Trust Fund, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and 11 of his predecessors offered the following open letter to Congress. In addition to Secretary Foxx, Secretaries Ray LaHood, Mary Peters, Norman Mineta, Rodney Slater, Federico Peña, Samuel Skinner, Andrew Card, James Burnley, Elizabeth Dole, William Coleman and Alan Boyd all signed the letter. Their message: Congress’ work doesn’t end with the bill under consideration. Transportation in America still needs a much larger, longer-term investment.
