However, implementing TOD along the West Corridor will not be a quick or simple process.

Setting realistic expectations about the scale, timing and location of private investment along new transit lines is especially critical where new development is expected to help pay for needed transit improvements, neighborhood amenities, or other community benefits.

Colorado: High Speed Rail Feasibility Study

ROCKY MOUNTAIN RAIL AUTHORITY
Colorado has a unique transportation challenge. Our mountain resorts and metropolitan areas play a special role as national and international attractions. The vast majority of the state’s commercial and recreational centers are connected by just two major highways, I-70 and I-25. Traffic congestion is increasing in both corridors, impeding travel during weekdays on I-25 and weekends on I-70.

For illustrative purposes, one of those options was further optimized and used to develop a sample implementation plan as part of this report. That implementation plan identifies four potential phases for having high-speed rail operational in Colorado as early as 2021.

“I think if you just use the word “infrastructure” people tend to think it’s going to be boring, but, for instance, the moment you start to think about how long it takes to get to work every day, getting stuck in traffic, or having the train run on time, people really care about these things…you don’t really think of Americans voting to raise their taxes for things, but people are aware, and I don’t know that we’re going to have a civil rights era like people marching in the streets for this, but perhaps they will. I think maybe there’s more awareness than we give people credit for…if there was ever a time when the infrastructure in some ways was in the public dialogue, it’s right now…”
