24th Annual Highway Report

Reason Foundation’s Annual Highway Report has tracked the performance of the 50 state-owned highway systems from 1984 to 2016. The 24th Annual Highway Report ranks the performance of state highway systems in 2016, with congestion and bridge condition data from 2017. Each state’s overall rating is determined by rankings in 13 categories, including highway expenditures per mile, Interstate and primary road pavement conditions, urbanized area congestion, bridge conditions and fatality rates. The study is based on spending and performance data state highway agencies submitted to the federal government. This study also reviews changes in highway performance over the past year.

Kansas City, MO: Man Throws Birthday Party for Pothole

Fed up with the hundreds of potholes that line Kansas City streets and a perceived lack of urgency from the city to fix them, Frank Sereno decided the best way to solve the problem was to celebrate it.

He threw a birthday party for the 3-month-old pothole on his street, complete with a slice of cake with a candle on top.

Repair Priorities

The nation is falling behind when it comes to the condition of our roads. Between 2009 and 2017, the percentage of the roads nationwide in poor condition increased from 14 to 20 percent. The percentage of roads in “good condition” increased only slightly: from 36 to 38 percent over that eight-year period.
