Guest on The Infra Blog: Congressman Tom Reed (R-NY, 23rd District)

Congressman Tom Reed on The Infra Blog

If you can at least organize and come to that common ground, and actually put your name on it like we did with the Problem Solvers Caucus Consensus Position, it carries much more weight…What you see in the Problem Solvers Caucus Infrastructure Proposal is exactly that. Much of this is common sense; much of this are things that the American people, I think, will look at and go, “That’s exactly what we’re looking for; that’s exactly the kind of reforms; that’s the kind of expansion of traditional infrastructure and the non-traditional infrastructure improvements like broadband that need to be done.”

How much do we care about water resources and water safety?

Trump infrastructure plan - water infrastructure

Now that the Trump infrastructure plan has been released, the question is, “Will it hold water?” That’s a question of high interest to people who deal with water issues on a daily basis.  City, county and state officials who need financial assistance for projects related to water resources and water systems had hoped for some sort of timely help from Congress.  It appears, however, that no immediate assistance will be forthcoming. Despite bipartisan support for infrastructure reform, there is no consensus on how to get started.

Guest on The Infra Blog: Stephen K. Benjamin, Mayor of Columbia, SC

Thursday, February 22nd, 2018
Mayor Steve Benjamin, Columbia, SC

Across this country, 85% of our citizens now live in cities and metropolitan economies. 89% of the jobs are in the cities and in metropolitan economies. 91% of America’s nearly $20 trillion GDP is created in cities and metropolitan economies. We are driving the economic growth of this country. And our message is that by partnering with mayors, by looking at the creative solutions that are being deployed all across this country, seeing the innovative ideas, seeing the massive investment in infrastructure, but also embracing the idea of inclusion and ways in which we can all move forward together, is the way to go…We’re always coming around the table. That’s the strength, I believe, of being a mayor and having to always listen to every opinion, not gerrymandered ideas with narrow constituencies. We’re going to continue to do that.

Rebuilding America's Infrastructure - Problem Solvers Caucus

PROBLEM SOLVERS CAUCUS (PSC) INFRASTRUCTURE WORKING GROUP Executive Summary America’s infrastructure supports the world’s largest economy across a network of nearly 9 million miles of roadway, 160,000 public water systems, 5.5 million miles of local electrical distribution lines, and nearly 90 million fixed broadband subscribers. Unfortunately, due to years of underinvestment and deferred maintenance, America […]

Reactions to the BRIDGE Act

Monday, August 14th, 2017
reactions to the bridge act

Keeping America competitive in the global marketplace requires first-rate highways, bridges, ports, transit and a modernized aviation system. I applaud Senator Warner for crafting bi-partisan legislation that recognizes that necessity. The BRIDGE Act employs a creative financing mechanism which leverages private investments with those from the federal, state and local sources. It is a common-sense approach to attracting billions of private sector dollars to help finance important projects with tangible economic benefits.

Dear Secretary Chao: We write to encourage you to work with Congress to build consensus around real solutions to rebuild our Nation’s infrastructure. To achieve our shared goal of completing transportation projects that will bolster America’s economic competitiveness, it is essential that we work together to identify ways to provide robust increases in Federal funding for surface transportation.

Beyond Traffic 2045

Beyond Traffic 2045 is U.S. DOT’s most comprehensive assessment of current and future conditions in decades—it is a call to action. After years of chronic underinvestment and policy choices that, in some cases, have actually worked at cross purposes with the broader economic and social goals held by most Americans, now is the time for a report like this one to be read, understood, considered—and used, to breathe new life into funding and policy discussions at all levels.
